FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What is "Cold Process" soap?"
Today, homemade soaps can be crafted with the natural, skin-nourishing ingredients your skin needs and deserves. A good cleanser is fundamental to a healthy skin care routine, whether your preference is a heavy-duty oil, a mild soothing cream, or an exfoliating scrub. Cold process soap is made by combining oils and sodium hydroxide lye, which causes a chemical reaction called saponification. In the process, you get to choose the oils, scents, colorants, and any other ingredients. Handmade soaps using the cold process method lets you take advantage of using an abundance of aromatic and antibacterial herbs such as rosemary, sage, thyme, and oregano. Roses and lavender add a soft scent while citrus zest adds a zing. The cold process method is ideal for preserving the benefits of plant-derived oils and butters. Some of the world's best soap makers use the cold process method.
  • What ingredients do you use to make your cold process soap?
Here at Eco Savvy we use vegan friendly ingredients, and try to source locally if we can. Our soaps contain some (not all) of the following oils and butters: Pure Olive Oil Coconut Oil Palm Oil (sustainably sourced) Shea Butter Cocoa Butter Sweet Almond Oil Castor Oil Rice Bran Oil Sunflower Oil All soap is made with Lye (Sodium Hydroxide) - including melt and pour soap. The process to create soap requires lye, (lye reacts with the oils and saponifies into soap). Soap is the result of a chemical reaction - after saponification lye is no longer present in the final bars. If your soap wasn't made with lye then chances are its a synthetic detergent!! We also make milk soaps with: Almond Milk Coconut Milk Hempseed Milk We also make beer soaps with: Stouts Ales Craft beers Added or special ingredients can include: Beeswax Cucumber puree Manuka Honey Botanicals (rose petals, calendula petals, kawakawa) Poppyseeds Cocoa Powder Herbs & Spices (turmeric, mint)
  • How long does it take to make and cure cold process soaps?
Each small batch of cold process soap takes approximately 2 - 3 hours from start to finish. Then we leave it for 24 hours and cut it by hand. We like to cure our cold process soaps for 8 weeks in a dry, ventilated place out of direct sunlight. After 8 weeks we label our soaps and they are ready for new homes.
  • How can I make my handmade cold process soaps last longer?
Our soaps do not contain any preservatives, fillers, hardeners or harmful chemicals therefore they need some extra care to get the best out of them. Try and keep your soaps dry between uses, use a soap dish, stand them on their end, and when they get small or thin I like to "stick" them to another soap or put them in our sisal bags (see accessories).
  • What about eczema and skin allergies?
Eczema and skin allergies are triggered by lots of different things. No soap is going to cure it!! But, handmade soaps can sometimes be less irritating than commerial soaps (depending on whats in them). All my soaps are free from preservatives, hardeners, harmful chemicals and fillers. I have a totally unscented and colour free soap in my collection (the "Plain Jane") which customers buy/try if they have sensitive skin, also suitable for babies, feel free to check them out.
